on Dangerous Highway Near Yellowstone National Park

U.S. Highway 191/287 is a busy road, heavily used by eighteen-wheelers, commercial vehicles, tourists, locals, and through-travelers. This road cuts right through a critical migration corridor important to wild buffalo, elk, grizzly bears, wolves, moose, coyotes and many other wild creatures who live in and around Yellowstone National Park. Every spring, hundreds of wild buffalo head west out of Yellowstone toward their favored calving grounds on and around Horse Butte, but they must cross this dangerous highway to get there.

TAKE ACTION! Please contact Montana Department of Transportation Director Mack Long as well as Montana Governor Greg Gianforte, and ask them to earmark highway transportation funding to implement wildlife safe passage infrastructure on US Highway 191/287 in the Hebgen Basin, west of Yellowstone National Park.

I am writing to ask that the state of Montana earmark transportation funding for wildlife safe passage infrastructure along US Highway 191/287, in the Hebgen Basin, west of Yellowstone National Park. Every year, particularly in the spring, hundreds of the country’s last wild buffalo migrate through the upper Madison River Valley to their traditional calving grounds on and around Horse Butte. This migration forces wild buffalo to negotiate approximately ten miles of this heavily-used highway between Fir Ridge and the town of West Yellowstone. Collisions with vehicles, especially at night, are a common occurrence. Buffalo Field Campaign, a wild bison advocacy group, offers a community service by being present along the highway to help warn motorists that buffalo are on or near the road, often from dawn through the dark of night. The Montana Department of Transportation has also made valiant efforts to help increase safety for wildlife and motorists, by placing multiple permanent warning signs of the presence of buffalo along this ten-mile stretch of highway. Regardless of these efforts, collisions continue to happen and more needs to be done. Highly successful wildlife crossings — safe passage infrastructure — are increasing in the United States, Canada, and other countries around the globe. Montana boasts one of the best examples on the Flathead Indian Reservation along US Highway 93. There is no doubt that Montana, known for her abundant wildlife and wild landscapes, can be *the* leader in this win-win solution for wildlife and motorists if safe passage infrastructure is created west of Yellowstone, the world’s first national park. Yellowstone and the surrounding landscape is globally unique as it is the only place left in the lower-48 states where so many pre-colonial wildlife communities still exist. Safe passage infrastructure would be a significant boon to the country’s last wild, migratory bison, wolves, elk, grizzly bears, moose, as well as millions of human travelers. Please secure and earmark the funding necessary and begin to implement safe passage infrastructure in this critical wildlife migration corridor. You never know, but the life you save may be the one you love. Contact Buffalo Field Campaign to learn more about how wild buffalo are using this corridor and work with them to determine the best placement for safe passage over- and underpasses.
